Two good teams met in a late-season showdown.

The Utah Utes had to overcome a fine performance from Las Vegas pitcher Ben Angus to grab a 3-1 win at Gambler Field. Angus allowed 3 runs over 7 innings. Utah starter Darin Makowsky was credited with the win after throwing 94 pitches over 6 innings. His record now stands at 6-2.

Aster Smith, the 23-year old second baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Smith contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to put Utah up, 3-1.

Smith said his team "played with focus."
