The Charlotte Hawks earned a close win over the Denver Rabbits, thanks in part to Malcolm Sherman. The Charlotte right-hander, the 7th overall pick in the 2020 draft, played a key role in the 2-1 victory. Sherman got the win, improving to 4-0. He gave up 8 hits and walked 0 over 6.1 innings. He allowed 1 run. Adrian Banuelos notched his 10th save of the season.
The Rabbits had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hawks going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the three-time All-Star Joey Ladd came to the plate. Ladd hit a solo home run on a 1-0 fastball from Denver hurler Manuel Rodriguez. It was Ladd's 5th home run of the year.
Ladd expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
Denver drops to 11-12.
