Pitcher of the Month Named in SAL

The Pitcher of the Month Award has been picked and the South Atlantic League victor is Savannah relief ace, Marcos Espada. For his solid outings in July he has been named the league's premier pitcher.
During the month, the Sky Chiefs star had 9 saves in 9 save opportunities, a 3.68 ERA and 2 wins and 1 loss. In 14.2 innings Espada struck out 15 and gave up 12 hits and 2 walks.
Espada has collected 9 saves for the year with 15 strikeouts and 2 walks in 14.2 innings while registering a 3.68 ERA and a 2-1 won-lost record.

Valencia Takes Best Bat Trophy in July

Jorge Valencia may be much younger than other hitters in the South Atlantic League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in July to win the Batter of the Month award.
The 20-year-old Lakewood center fielder hit .393 with 5 home runs, 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
Thus far this year, Valencia is batting .343 with 13 home runs, 53 RBIs and 48 runs scored.

Season Over for Garcia

Angel Garcia had hoped for the best, but expected the worst. Today, he learned from the Hagerstown medical staff that he would miss the rest of the season. The Hagerstown reliever suffered a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in an earlier ballgame. He admitted to being discouraged, but said he plans to come back strong next year.
During this season, Garcia has delivered 1 saves. In 10 relief appearances, he has 16 strikeouts in 15 innings with a 6.60 ERA and no wins and no losses.
